Murder Castle

Holmes moved to Chicago around 1886. He worked at Mrs. Holton's drugstore until buying the drugstore on credit and killing her to erase the debt. Holmes built his castle across from the drugstore by hiring workers and firing them without pay. Thus, Holmes saved money on construction and no individual knew the interior layout of the castle (Depraved). The building incorporated gas pipes to asphyxiate victims and vats of acid, a cremation oven, and quick-lime pits to eliminate bodies. The castle became a hotel for the World's Columbian Exposition providing Holmes an unlimited supply of victims. (Bio)
